For instance which wood do you prefer? How good is the hardware? How do I know it’s good and secure from the place it is hanging?
All these and more need to be answered so you can get years of service and enjoyment out of your new garden swing.
Also for some the vinyl or plastic models are the way to go since there is very little maintenance but usually it is the wood models that are in demand. Of course a good finish will be necessary if the swing is going to be exposed directly to the weather.

In reading reviews around the net I can pick up information on what companies have free shipping, make it easy to get replacement parts, have the wood I’m in the mood for. How well they package and handle any problems that may arise. How clear the assembly instructions are and all kinds of detail that I wouldn’t think of till it’s already at my home.
I’ve noticed with some metal models the return policy can be a little vague so make sure all parts have been delivered before assembly so you can return in new condition if you are totally unsatisfied.
I must say most of the time everything will be just fine, you just take your time and follow instructions a step at a time and before you know it you will have the swing ready to go.
Let’s talk about the different wood models. Teak is very popular for it’s beauty and it’s inherent ability to fight moisture and heat. The oils are already in teak wood giving you less upkeep to stay on top of. The wood has been used in boating decks forever.
Another main reason here in the south teak is a favorite in the usual pesky insects like termites will go for easier targets like pine.
Of course there is always cedar, some people love the smell of cedar and you don’t have to treat it. And you will get hte same built in bug protection that you enjoy with teak.
Oak is another good one that will look beautiful in your yard for years and it’s a very strong wood. Treated Pine is popular also. I know sometimes with treated pine the feel of the finish can vary, try to find reviews if you can with treated pine. I’ve been around a lot and sometimes it’s great and sometimes pine has to be treated to the point that you loose the feel and smell of the wood. But price can play a big difference here so do your homework.
Garden swing seats are like any other product on the market, you get what you pay for. The less in price the wood will be thinner and less of it for support. But that is fine for some people because they know how much use a swing is going to get, if it will be abused or over taxed once too often. Keep this in mind when you’re making your purchasing decision.
Make sure that the your garden swing can be used in a stand alone A frame just as easy as hanging it from the porch beams.
Additional Resources:
Hopefully the assembly process is not too complex. Be sure and inspect all parts and inventory amount before starting. It’s easier to deal with the vendor before drilling holes. Sometimes parts are left out that are critical and can keep you from finishing the job safely.
In most cases a call to the vendor will get a replacement part sent right out. They usually want to keep the customer happy as opposed to getting the swing back.
Also one the most important part of the whole process is hanging the swing correctly. If you have any doubts consult a carpenter or someone that installs swings and knows the structural strength of whatever your using for support.
If your new swing is going to be exposed to the elements or the possibility of insects then research your local area to find the best finishing paints, which one lasts the longest between applications. The wood you decide to use may not need upkeep at all but know this for sure.
Find out in your area what insects are most likely to be a pest over the long haul and decide how you will deal with it. There will be several resources in your area to study this information or again talk to a carpenter that works locally or a knowledgeable sales person at your local hardware store.
Last but not least check the references or feedback of your online swing vendor to make sure there are plenty of satisfied customers.
